TangoVia Buenos Aires believes that accessible and high quality presentations of tango are necessary for solidifying and maintaining tango's position as a well developed and high quality art form.
Along with the Gran TangoVia Buenos Aires Orchestra and the "Emilio Balcarce" Tango Orchestra School (Orquesta Escuela), the organization works with a wide range of distinguished artists in order to produce musical events and artistic programs that project the rich diversity of tango to audiences throughout the city of Buenos Aires, the interior of Argentina, and the world.
Programs
- Our intention is to enrich and continue the traditional musical, poetic, and choreographic excellence of tango. We produce presentations and recordings of the highest quality with the Gran Orquesta, the Orquesta Escuela, special groups that we convene, and invited soloists and groups.
- We wish to know the potential of tango as a music for diverse audiences and events. We present tango as chamber music, dance music, concert music, film music, music for parades, for theater, for carnival and more, without any of these forms being more important than any other. A concert hall is not more important than a milonga, or vise versa.
- We present all the forms of tango as contemporary and alive. We are not an organization based on limited repertories or specific epochs. We are a progressive arts institution, focused on preservation but dedicated to creation.
- We promote tango as an elaborated but not exclusive art form, with elements of distinct origin which conform to its historic excellence, based on three essential ingredients: the music, the poetry and the dance.
- We bring the sentiment and the expression of tango to audiences around the world through tours that present groups of different sizes, styles and philosophies.
- We present the tango orchestra (orquesta típica) as the peak of tango’s development. Because of this, we dedicate our greatest efforts to the preservation, codification, and diffusion of all available information on the tango orchestra, from the earliest to the most contemporary styles.
- We stimulate the development of the tango tradition by commissioning new composers and presenting the best groups and artists (well-known or not) in creative and unique situations.
- We support the integration of tango with other forms of music from around the world (jazz, classical music, candombe, etc) through the utilization of new and integrative compositions as well as arranging performances with musicians from other styles, while always respecting the essence of our music.
- We want to promote the image of tango as an elegant and sophisticated art form, one that is integrative, straightforward, sensual and rich in sensibilities. Without ignoring the fact that it is an art of extraordinary variety—from the best to the worst, from mediocrity to excellence—an art that is intelligent, reverent and irreverent, as much a ritual as an innovation, but never following a single parameter or with a shortage of humor or sensuality. We want to welcome people to tango, without having to persuade.
- We believe tango is a fundamental part of our identity, with all of its contradictions. We think that the possibility of knowing this art more profoundly brings us closer to understanding who we are, where we come from and, therefore, helps us to choose where we are going. We do not concern ourselves with the eternal tangle of opposing trends or the elitism of fashionable arts.
- We encourage collaborations with other forms of art (not only music) in order to create channels of communication, stimulation, learning, and mutual enrichment through multiple disciplines.
- We maintain and revive, when necessary, the traditional and popular social activities of tango: the milongas, the concerts in bars and cafes, the great dances with live orchestras, and contests for musical, poetic, and choreographic creators.
